🚨 I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT LIFE DECISION TO MAKE. 🚨

    I need adult supervision.

    Unfortunately…

    I’m the adult.

    So that’s not gonna help.

    Now…

Every single one of you knows that I fucking HATE birds.

    Not dislike.

    Not “I’d rather avoid them.”

I have a blood feud with those tiny feathered assholes.

    And before anybody says…

    “They’re just birds, Heather.”

EXCUSE THE FUCK OUT OF YOU.

    They tried to assassinate me.

    TWICE.

    ON TWO COMPLETELY SEPARATE OCCASIONS.

    As a child.

I’m convinced birds have some kind of underground crime syndicate.

They pass my picture around every spring.

“TARGET HAS BEEN LOCATED. INITIATE OPERATION SHIT ON HER.”

    HOWEVER…

I have found myself in a bit of a predicament.

    See…

    I enjoy rum.

I stumble around like I have a peg leg anyway…

(Thank you, Multiple Sclerosis. Very cool.)

My right eye still isn’t pulling its weight, so honestly…

An eye patch is becoming less of a fashion statement and more of a medical accessory.

    SO MY BRAIN…

Being the smooth-brained, ADHD-powered chaos goblin that it is…

    Immediately went…

    “…Well shit. Guess we’re becoming a pirate.”

Because obviously that’s the next logical step.

    Not physical therapy.

    Not a hobby.

    PIRACY.

    Now…

    A pirate requires certain things.

    ☠️ Rum.

    ☠️ Eye patch.

    ☠️ Peg leg.

    ☠️ Ship.

    ☠️ The ability to yell…

    “AHOY, MOTHERFUCKERS!”

    …at absolutely inappropriate times.

    And most importantly…

    ☠️ A PARROT.

    Here’s where shit gets complicated.

To become the pirate I was clearly destined to be…

    I must willingly invite…

    A BIRD…

    Into my own fucking house.

Do you people understand the level of character development this would require??

I’d literally be sleeping next to the enemy.

    What if it knows?

What if birds have generational trauma too?

What if its great-great-grandmother was one of the pigeons that tried to end my bloodline?

What if this whole thing is just…

    Bird revenge.

Imagine waking up at 3:17 in the morning…

    To hear…

    “BITCH…WE REMEMBER.”

    …from somewhere in the darkness.

    ABSOLUTELY THE FUCK NOT.

    And parrots live for like…

    SEVENTY DAMN YEARS.

    That’s not a pet.

That’s a hostile roommate who will outlive me.

I’m gonna spend thousands of dollars feeding this flying velociraptor…

Only for it to call me a dumb bitch in MY OWN VOICE.

    Or scream…

    “HEATHER’S POOPING!”

Every single time I go to the bathroom.

Or answer the phone before I can.

“SHE’S DRUNK AGAIN. CALL BACK TOMORROW.”

Or learn every single cuss word I know…

Which means this bird would have a vocabulary larger than most politicians.

Then one day the UPS guy shows up…

And from inside my house he hears…

“WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT, STEVE?!”

    The best part?

His name won’t even be Polly.

    Absolutely not.

    His name will be…

    Captain Beakard.

    CEO of Bird Crimes.

    President of Feathered Felonies.

    Regional Manager of Emotional Damage.

    Anyway…

Should I continue my lifelong war against birds…

Or should I fully commit to my pirate era and adopt the very creature that has spent the last forty years plotting my demise?

    🏴‍☠️

    Because if I disappear…

    Don’t look for me.

Just follow the sound of a parrot screaming…

    “YARRR, YOU FAT BITCH!”

…and you’ll probably find my body.

  • Happy Happy Joy Joy

    I woke up today.

I’m gonna count my blessings and call that a win.

    Because honestly…

    Some days…

That’s the biggest accomplishment I’ve got.

I don’t think I’ll ever completely get used to living with anxiety and depression.

I don’t care how many therapists I talk to.

I don’t care how much I work on myself.

    I don’t care how many self-help books I read.

I don’t care how much grace I try to give myself.

    Somehow…

It always finds its way back.

    That’s anxiety.

    That’s depression.

I can have the absolute shittiest week imaginable…

Finally get ONE really good day…

    Laugh.

    Smile.

    Feel almost…

    Normal.

    And then…

    Out of absolutely nowhere…

That good day turns into a horrible night.

    No warning.

    No reason.

    Just…

    Darkness.

For whatever reason, it almost always happens on Saturday nights.

I swear my brain waits until the ONE night I actually NEED sleep because I have to work early Sunday morning.

It’s like my anxiety clocks in for its shift and says…

“Good evening, Heather. I see you’re almost happy. We can’t have that. WE NEED you MISERABLE at ALL times…”

    Then suddenly…

    I’m replaying conversations from 2002.

Wondering if everyone secretly hates me.

Remembering embarrassing things I said in seventh grade.

Planning arguments that will never happen.

Creating entire fictional scenarios where everyone leaves me.

…all while staring at the damn ceiling at three o’clock in the morning.

    It’s exhausting.

    Absolutely…

    Soul-level exhausting.

    But I’m realizing something.

    I can’t control other people’s actions.

    I can’t control their words.

    I can’t control their choices.

And I am NOT responsible for carrying the weight of everyone else’s decisions…

Even the people I gave birth to.

That one has been one of the hardest lessons of my life.

    Because when you’re a mom…

    You want to fix everything.

    Protect everyone.

    Carry everyone.

    Save everyone.

    But sometimes…

The people you love have to walk their own path.

They have to make their own mistakes.

They have to learn their own lessons.

And loving them doesn’t mean destroying yourself trying to carry burdens that were never yours to carry.

I love my family with everything I have.

    I always will.

But their choices belong to them.

    Mine belong to me.

The only person I’m truly responsible for…

    Is myself.

    My peace.

    My healing.

    My happiness.

    And damn…

Sometimes that feels harder than taking care of everyone else.

Because I’m really good at loving other people.

But when it comes to loving Heather…

    Yeah…

    Not so much.

The voice in my head tells me she’s worthless.

It tells me she’d be easier to replace than to love.

It tells me everyone would be better off without her.

It tells me she’s too loud.

    Too much.

    Too emotional.

    Too broken.

    Too needy.

    Too exhausting.

And that’s the cruelest part about depression.

It doesn’t just make you sad.

It makes you believe the lies it tells you.

    I struggle with anxiety.

    I struggle with depression.

There is nothing shameful about that.

    It’s an illness.

    Not a weakness.

    Not a character flaw.

    Not a lack of faith.

    Not me being “dramatic.”

It’s just part of the hand life dealt me.

Some days I’ll lose the fight.

    Some days I’ll win.

    Today…

    I got out of bed.

    I took a shower.

    I made it to work.

    I took a breath.

    My heart is still beating…

…even if my brain occasionally acts like that’s somehow disappointing.

I know those thoughts aren’t actually me.

    They’re symptoms.

    They’re loud.

    They’re convincing.

    But they’re still symptoms.

    And maybe…

    That’s enough for today.

    I guess.

Now I just have to learn something I’ve spent almost my entire life struggling with…

How to love myself with the same compassion I so freely give to everyone else.

    Maybe…

    That’s where healing really begins.

    ❤️

And I guess this is the perfect example of what anxiety actually looks like.

    Hell…

    The other day…

I was joking around saying I was collecting a group of ladies to go see the sexy Australian male strippers.

    I was excited.

    Laughing.

    Making plans.

    Being my usual ridiculous self.

    Then…

I spent the entire night lying awake with my own thoughts.

By the time this morning rolled around…

My brain had completely convinced me…

That nobody actually wanted me there…

Or at least didn’t want to go WITH me.

That I was the one doing the inviting.

That nobody had really invited ME.

That I’d just be in the way.

That people were probably only being nice.

That I’d somehow ruin everyone’s night.

Not because ANYONE said those things.

Not because ANYONE made me feel unwelcome.

    Not because ANYONE excluded me.

My brain simply took absolutely ZERO evidence…

And built an entire damn courtroom case around it.

    Complete with witnesses.

    PowerPoint presentations.

    DNA evidence.

    A jury.

    A guilty verdict.

And an appeal that somehow also got denied.

Depression and anxiety are incredibly convincing liars.

They’ll have you believing things that never happened.

Feeling guilty for things that aren’t your fault!

    Apologizing for simply existing!

Convincing yourself you’re a burden when the people who love you have never once called you one.

So…after about 7 and a half hours of overthinking and bawling my eyes out…

I think I’m gonna sit this one out.

    Not because of anybody else.

Because my brain won this round.

    And that’s okay.

Sometimes survival looks like knowing your limits.

To all the ladies who are going…

    PLEASE GO.

    Seriously.

    Have the absolute BEST time.

    Dance.

    Laugh.

    Scream your heads off.

    Embarrass yourselves.

    Throw some dollar bills.

Yell at the sexy Australians for me.

If you’ve never been to one of those shows…

    GO.

    They’re ridiculously fun.

I genuinely hope every single one of you has an amazing night.

Maybe next time my brain won’t convince me I don’t belong!!

Maybe next time my brain will shut up and I might believe that people want to actually spend time with me and not just out of obligation.

    Until then…

I’m going to keep reminding myself…

    Anxiety is a liar.

    Depression is a liar.

    Healing isn’t linear.

    Some battles leave scars.

    Some battles leave you exhausted.

    But they don’t last forever.

    Tomorrow…

    Maybe I’ll win.

    Today…

    I’m still here. (unfortunately)

    And for right now…

    That’s enough.

Love yourselves a little extra today, okay?

Because I’m still trying to figure out how to do the same.

    ❤️

🚨 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM YOUR LOCAL FERAL HOUSECAT (Heather Joleen Miller) 🚨

Listen here, you beautiful little weirdos…

If you’re on my friends list…

    YOU’RE MY PEOPLE.

    Congratulations.

    You have been emotionally adopted.

    There is no opt-out button.

If somebody hurts you, I will immediately transform from “socially awkward potato” into Heather with a folding chair.

    Need to cry? Call me.

Need to scream? I’ll scream with you.

    Need help hiding a body?

…Let’s start by discussing better life choices.

Then we’ll move on to hypothetical landscaping projects.

    (For legal reasons, Karen… that’s a joke.)

    Now…

    I am BROKE.

    Not “can’t buy Starbucks” broke.

I’m “my bank account is held together with duct tape and overdraft protection” broke.

So don’t ask me for money because we’re all riding the struggle bus…

…and the damn thing just got repossessed.

    BUT…

We can absolutely give each other pedicures and start selling feet pics.

    Listen…

If some lonely millionaire wants to finance our grocery bills because he finds our left pinky toes enchanting…

Who am I to stand in the way of true love?

    I know SEVERAL awesome photographers.

We’re one weird business plan away from financial freedom.

    😂😂😂

    But seriously…

I love every single one of you.

If you’re still here reading my feral nonsense…

    Thank you.

    I’m rooting for you.

Whether you’re chasing your dream job…

Or you’re just trying not to have a complete mental breakdown in the Walmart baking aisle…

    Both count.

And if your brain decides to become a complete asshole…

    Call me.

We’ll stumble through this haunted-ass escape room together.

    We’ll cry.

    We’ll laugh.

We’ll wonder whose dumbass idea adulthood was.

But you are NOT doing it alone.

    I’ve got you.

And to the people who’ve had me lately…

    Thank you.

The last ten years have kicked my ass.

    Cancer.

    Then cancer again.

    A broken back.

    Multiple sclerosis.

    Financial stress.

Watching my kids make spectacularly dumb decisions because… well… they’re kids.

And everything else life decided to pile on in between.

My brain has been playing the world’s worst game of “Let’s Catastrophize EVERYTHING.”

    Suicide isn’t funny.

    It isn’t attention-seeking.

It’s terrifying. I think about it every single day, MULTIPLE times a day. I am hanging on by my finger nails mentally peeps!

Fighting those thoughts every single day wears a person down in ways that are hard to explain unless you’ve lived it.

    Medication helps.

    But sometimes…

    People help too.

    Honesty helps.

    Feeling seen helps.

    That’s why I write.

I’ve been told my posts are too long by more people than I can count.

    To that I say…

    I’m sorry…

…that reading appears to be such a burden for you.

    😂

You’re under absolutely ZERO obligation to read them.

BUT DUDES, DUDETTES I have stories to tell.

    Some are ridiculous.

    Some are heartbreaking.

    Most are both.

If you make it all the way to the end…

I appreciate the hell out of you.

Thank you for laughing with me.

Thank you for crying with me.

Thank you for reminding me that the voice in my head is a lying little bastard who needs his ass kicked!

    Now go drink some water.

    Take your meds.

Eat something besides caffeine and spite.

Text someone you love and tell them how much they mean to you.

    And remember…

Some loud, sarcastic, stubborn, weird, feral woman in Nebraska is cheering for you harder than your intrusive thoughts are rooting against you.

I love you all, my peeps. ❤️

  • Family Ties

Does anyone really have a clue what we’re doing? Like REALLY? Honestly?

Okay… if you answered yes… WHY is that what we’re SUPPOSED to be doing?

Who decided life has to fit into one tiny little mold? What works for one person doesn’t always work for another. We all think differently. We all have different hopes, dreams, fears, goals, and reasons for getting out of bed in the morning. We laugh at different things. We love different people.

And honestly… I think that’s what makes this world so damn amazing.

DIVERSITY is what makes life interesting.

One of my favorite things in the world is talking to people and hearing their stories. Even people I’ve known my entire life will suddenly tell me something I’ve never heard before, and I learn something completely new about an old friend.

    Life is weird like that.

My dad lost another one of his older sisters this last week. It’s hard watching my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents slowly leave us. This whole getting old thing… it makes it REAL.

I remember being a little girl watching my dad lose his parents.

I was only two years old when my Grandma Patton passed away, so my memories are few and fuzzy. But the ones I have… they’re warm.

That’s the best word I have for her.

    Warm.

    Full of love.

    She gave the BEST hugs.

I can still *almost* hear her voice. It’s faded over the years, but I swear sometimes I still hear her saying,

*”Heather, come here and sit with me. We can have a snack together.”*

I’d climb up on her lap, and we’d eat giant marshmallows together.

I was OBSESSED with her cookie jar collection.

    Now Grandpa Patton…

    I remember EVERYTHING.

That man was ornery. Full of fire. Goofy one minute and serious the next.

My very first butt spanking came from Grandpa… with a fly swatter.

AND IT WASN’T EVEN MY FAULT, PEEPS.

It was my cousin Rich’s fault!

    Rich told Grandpa “No.”

    He wasn’t done playing Nintendo.

Let’s just say… being trapped between the closet door, the desk, my cousin, Grandpa, and that damn fly swatter…

I learned Rich’s lesson for him.

    You didn’t tell Grandpa no.

    You didn’t tell Grandpa SHIT.

You did what Grandpa said… POST HASTE.

Now I’d like to think I inherited my love of scaring people from him.

That old fart used to hide inside the linen closet.

He’d crack the door open just enough so when someone walked by and pushed it shut, it’d slowly creep back open.

The closet did that all the time… so you NEVER knew if Grandpa was actually in there.

    If you ignored it…

    BAM!

He’d explode out of that closet and scare the absolute life out of you.

Or—and somehow this was even worse—that GROWN MAN would turn off the bathroom lights, hide inside the shower, and WAIT for someone to come in to pee.

    HE WAS A MENACE.

I’d give just about anything for one more one of those long Grandpa hugs…

One more kiss on the top of my head…

Or to hear him sitting outside whittling a piece of wood while whistling some tune only he knew.

    Ahhh…

    Memories.

    My grandparents had ELEVEN children.

    ELEVEN.

Can you imagine raising eleven kids in the 1950s and 60s on a farmer’s budget?

Now imagine trying to do that today.

    Saints.

    Absolute saints.

My three keep me on my toes. I cannot even begin to imagine eleven.

    My dad was the baby.

    The youngest.

    Spoiled rotten.

    A pain in the butt…

    And he knows it.

The other day, I sat in the back of the funeral home because I wasn’t feeling well and wanted an easy escape if I needed one.

From where I was sitting, I watched my family from behind.

I found myself remembering every funeral we’d gathered for before this one.

That funeral home used to be PACKED.

    Standing room only.

    Now…

We barely filled one side of the room.

I don’t know if it’s because we’ve simply lost so many people… or because the people who used to hold this family together are gone now, and life has carried everyone in different directions.

As I sat there, I was scrolling through old family pictures with my kids, telling them who everyone was.

    “This is your great aunt…”

    “That’s your great grandpa…”

“Oh my gosh… look how young everyone was.”

And that’s when it hit me.

Grandpa and Grandma have to be so unbelievably proud.

    Wherever they are…

They have to be looking down at this giant family they started and smiling.

They planted something so much bigger than themselves.

They built a family rooted in love, hard work, laughter, stubbornness, forgiveness, and showing up when it mattered.

That kind of legacy can’t be measured in money.

    It’s measured in generations.

    In stories.

    In memories.

    In people.

Sure, we don’t all gather like we used to.

    Life gets busy.

    People move.

Time keeps marching forward whether we’re ready or not.

But no matter how much time passes…

No matter how many last names change…

No matter how far apart we all end up living…

    We’re still family.

Whether we like it or not…

We’ve all got that Patton blood running through our veins.

And I couldn’t be prouder to say that Charles and Helen Patton were my grandparents.

They did one hell of a job.

Not because they raised Ten living children.

    Not because life was easy.

But because they built a family whose love has outlived them.

    That’s a legacy worth remembering.

  • My love language

    PEEPS.

    Question.

Do you ever wake up in the morning…

    …think of ONE specific person…

    …and immediately think…

**”I’m about to make your day significantly more inconvenient.”**

    Not because they DID anything.

    Not because you’re mad.

    Not because you’re seeking revenge.

    Just because…

    **CHAOS.**

Like your brain wakes up and chooses ONE victim.

And today’s episode is sponsored by…

    **MILD PSYCHOLOGICAL HARASSMENT.**

Now I know what you’re all are thinking…

*”Heather…that sounds like literally every damn day for you.”*

    FIRST OF ALL…

    *looking at you SHOCKED*

    UGH… RUDE.

    SECOND OF ALL…

    Okay, fair.

    BUT!

    It is NOT every day.

Some mornings I wake up and choose peace!

Some mornings I wake up and make coffee, sit on my deck and am quiet without a single thought in my brain…

Then one tiny little brain cell wakes up…

    looks around…

    stretches…

    cracks its knuckles…

    and whispers…

**”You know what would be funny…”**

A SINGLE THOUGHT enters my brain.

**”I wonder what my mother is doing…”**

    *CUE EVIL GRIN.*

    *MR. BURNS: “Excellent…”*

    YES…

I WONDER what MOTHER is doing…

    Well…

    There goes EVERYONE’S peaceful morning.

Because if I think of my mother before 9 a.m….

    IT’S GAME ON.

I don’t know what comes over me.

I become a 40-year-old toddler that somehow gained access to unlimited texting, caffeine, and absolutely ZERO adult supervision.

    I’ll call her…

…just to breathe into the phone…

    …and hang up.

    I’ll text…

    **”Call me. It’s important.”**

Then proceed to throw my phone across the room and go reorganize my spice cabinet.

    She can MARINATE.

I’ll send her a picture of a random screw I found in the garage with absolutely no context.

    *”Mom…should I be concerned?”*

    Concerned about WHAT, Heather?!

    I DON’T KNOW, MOTHER!!

THAT’S FOR YOU TO FIGURE OUT!!

    I’ll text…

**”Were you going to tell me?”**

    Then disappear for two hours.

She’ll be mentally reviewing the last 40 years of her life trying to figure out what the hell she’s supposed to have told me.

    Meanwhile…

I’m in the kitchen making grilled cheese.

WITHOUT A CARE IN THE WORLD.

    If she calls back?

    I decline it.

Because I’m committed to the bit.

    See…

    THIS…

This is how I show affection.

    Some people buy flowers.

    Some people write heartfelt cards.

    Some people hug.

    Absolutely the HELL NOT.

    Let’s talk about hugs.

    EWWWWWWWW!

    Don’t touch me! EVER!

    Don’t hug me.

    Don’t kiss me.

    Don’t pat my shoulder.

Don’t randomly grab my arm while you’re talking.

    NO!

I don’t even like shaking hands.

    Honestly…

If we could all stand about ten feet apart and scream our conversations across the parking lot like confused geese…

    That would be IDEAL.

Personal space is my love language.

    Matter of fact…

If I can hear you breathing…

    YOU’RE TOO DAMN CLOSE.

Back up before I start hissing.

    But…

    If I love you?

    OHHHHHHHH…

    YOU’RE SCREWED.

Because I don’t express affection with physical touch.

I express affection by becoming a complete and total goblin.

If I hide behind your front door and accidentally remove twelve years from your life expectancy…

    I love you.

If I send you seventeen completely unhinged TikToks or Reels at 2:13 in the morning because *”this reminded me of you…”*

    I love you.

If I repeatedly spell your name wrong ON PURPOSE…

    I love you.

If I give you a personalized nickname that has absolutely NOTHING to do with your actual name…

    I love you.

If I stare at you from across the room until you finally look at me…

    …and then immediately look away…

    I LOVE YOU.

If I bark or meow at you in Walmart…

    Congratulations.

    We’re basically family now.

If I intentionally become the biggest pain in your ass that you’ve encountered all week…

    Please understand…

That is the HIGHEST form of affection my emotionally constipated little feral raccoon heart is capable of expressing.

    Strangers get manners.

    Coworkers get professionalism. *(ish.)*

    The cashier gets kindness.

    The people I love?

You get a lifetime subscription to…

**”What fresh Heather bullshit is this?”**

    And honestly…

I hope every single one of you wakes up in the morning…

Sees my name pop up on their phone…

    …takes one long…

    deep…

    defeated…

    **”Goddammit…”**

    …before they even answer.

    Because they already know.

I have absolutely no reason for contacting you.

    No emergency.

    No important news.

    No life-altering announcement.

    I simply woke up…

    and chose…

    **YOU.**

May God have mercy on YOUR soul.

    Because I won’t.

    Now answer your damn phone.

    That’s love…

**BAYBEH.***(in my absolute BEST Butthead voice.)*

    **HEATHER JOLEEN STYLE!!!**

  • Anyone seen my crow?

    GUYYYYSSSSS…

I haven’t seen my crow in TWO WHOLE DAYS.

    I’m actually sad.

    Look…

I KNOW some of you are sitting there thinking…

    “Heather…it’s a crow.”

    NO.

    It was my deck therapist.

JUST when I was getting used to this feathered little weirdo showing up every morning…

    The asshole just GHOSTED ME.

    RUDE.

I was out there sharing my daily stories.

    Asking for life advice.

    Complaining about adulthood.

Talking shit about the neighborhood squirrels.

    The whole routine.

I EVEN TOLD THE DAMN THING…

“When I get paid, I’ll buy you some snacks.”

    I OFFERED BRIBES.

I told it if it liked my little sun-prism crystals hanging on the deck it was welcome to steal one and decorate its nest.

I was READY to support its hobbies.

And what do I get in return?

    ABSOLUTE SILENCE.

This is EXACTLY why birds are assholes.

One minute they’re sitting with you, Kash, and Goos during Coffee Time at Chez Miller…

Listening to your completely unhinged TED Talk about life…

    The next?

    POOF.

    Gone.

    Didn’t even leave a feather.

    Didn’t send a text.

Didn’t say, “Hey Heather…I’m gonna go terrorize another neighborhood for a couple days.”

    NOTHING.

So if anyone sees a judgmental crow wandering around York looking like it has heard entirely too much about my life…

Tell him his emotional support human is waiting on the deck with coffee…

…and we need to discuss this abandonment issue like adults.

(Well…like one adult and one crow. Let’s not get carried away.)

  • My WPM was like 80

    Alright…

Roll call, fellow Elder Millennials and Gen X survivors.

Remember when computer class wasn’t “learning apps.”

    It was TYPING.

    Not keyboarding.

    Not digital literacy.

    Just straight-up typing.

If you know what WPM (Words Per Minute) means, congratulations… your knees probably make popcorn noises when you stand up.

And if your school had one of those wooden boxes the shop teacher built that sat over your hands so you COULDN’T CHEAT by looking at the keyboard…

    WELCOME.

This post is your PTSD support group.

I was telling my kids about this the other day.

They looked at me like I had personally attended school with Abraham Lincoln.

    Then they casually informed me…

    “They don’t teach that anymore.”

    WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?!

    Excuse me?!

    YOU MEAN TO TELL ME…

MY GENERATION WAS PSYCHOLOGICALLY WATERBOARDED WITH TIMED TYPING TESTS…

“asdf jkl; asdf jkl; asdf jkl;”

    FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON?!

I spent YEARS having my confidence destroyed because I accidentally hit “G” instead of “H” while Ms. Powers stalked the room with a stopwatch like she was training Navy SEALs.

I lived in fear of hearing…

    “Eyes on your screen!”

Meanwhile these kids are over here looking directly at the keyboard like it’s a scenic overlook.

    No hand prison.

    No typing box.

    No WPM score.

No panic attack because you only hit 42 WPM while Danielle somehow cranked out 97 like she was secretly an IBM supercomputer.

How are they supposed to become…

    • Secretaries?

    • Court reporters?

    • Professional AIM chatroom speed demons?

    • MSN Messenger warriors?

    • The designated family member who types Grandma’s Christmas letter?

The older my kids get and the more I ask what they’re actually learning in school…

The more convinced I become that our generation was one giant educational science experiment.

    We memorized cursive.

    We diagrammed sentences.

We learned to balance a checkbook.

We survived the Presidential Fitness Test. MULTIPLE YEARS RUNNING.

We climbed a rope to the gym ceiling for reasons that STILL remain unclear.

    Seriously…

One day they were training us like Navy SEALs.

    The next day…

    “Find your square dancing partner!”

    WHY?!

Who was making these curriculum decisions?!

What life emergency were they preparing us for that required us to know both the Virginia Reel AND how to type 60 words per minute without looking?

We watched TVs get wheeled into the classroom on giant carts because that was basically our version of Netflix.

    We grew up hearing,

“Don’t touch the TV! You’ll mess up the tracking!”

    We had Oregon Trail.

    We died of dysentery.

We printed banners with Print Shop.

And apparently we were tortured into becoming typing ninjas…

…just so our children could lovingly hunt-and-peck at the keyboard with two fingers while making eye contact with every single key.

    I am owed financial compensation.

    Or at the VERY LEAST…

    A Kool-Aid Jammer.

    A pack of Dunkaroos.

A Fruit Roll-Up with the tattoos.

And one of those little wax bottles full of sugar water that tasted vaguely like chemicals.

I’ll be outside eating popsicles if anybody wants to hang out.

    My mom said it’s okay…

As long as we aren’t running in and out of the house because she isn’t paying to air-condition the entire outside!

  • Coffee With Heather, Kash, and Govt Surveillance Crow

    TOUCHÉ, MOTHER.

    TOUCH-FREAKING-É.

This morning I was on my deck enjoying my daily Coffee with Heather, Kash & The Government Surveillance Crow™.

    Yes.

    The crow was back.

    Sitting on the roof.

    Staring directly at me.

    Not blinking.

Just…judging every decision I’ve made since approximately 1994.

I have accepted that this bird either loves me, hates me, or is waiting for me to die so he can peck at my eyebrows.

    Either way…

    He needs a name.

    Drop your suggestions.

    ANYWHO.

Kash was acting like she’d snorted Pixy Stix.

    Up in the chair.

    Down off the chair.

    Sniff my shirt.

    Walk away.

    Come back.

    Sniff again.

    Repeat.

    Then I remembered…

I STILL smell like chocolate from yesterday’s cocoa powder catastrophe.

    I didn’t make tiramisu yesterday.

    I BECAME tiramisu.

My kitchen looks like Willy Wonka got raided by the DEA.

There is cocoa powder in places that defy both physics and the teachings of Jesus.

I found some IN MY BRA.

    HOW?!

    I have absolutely no explanation.

So I’m telling Kash, “You’re just as annoying as your boy kid…”

…and then karma came flying across the room like a steel folding chair thrown by Hulk Hogan.

    JAXIN…

    TREATS ME…

    THE EXACT SAME WAY…

    THAT I TREAT MY MOTHER.

    I literally stopped mid-sip.

    WHAT.

    THE.

    ACTUAL.

    FUCK.

    I DON’T DESERVE THIS.

My entire personality has been built around mildly inconveniencing my mother.

I call her just to say,

    “Hey…is your refrigerator running?”

    Then I immediately hang up.

    No punchline.

    No explanation.

    Just emotional damage.

Sometimes I’ll call to ask what she’s doing…

    She’ll say, “Nothing.”

    And I’ll say,

    “Good.”

    CLICK.

    THAT’S IT.

    That’s the whole phone call.

I wasted thirty-seven seconds of her life just because it made ME laugh.

    Now…

    Let’s discuss Exhibit B.

    My father.

    My mother MET this man.

    She DATED this man.

She voluntarily spent enough time with him to know exactly how his brain worked.

She looked this human embodiment of chaos directly in the eyeballs and said…

    “Hmmmm…

    I should reproduce with THAT.”

    MA’AM.

    EXCUSE ME?!

    You saw the warning labels.

    You ignored ALL OF THEM.

    You had ME.

    And somehow…

    SOMEHOW…

you were surprised that I turned out to be an absolute menace to society?

    THEN…

    The universe doubled down.

It looked at my genetic disaster and said…

“You know what this family needs?”

    “A FOURTH GENERATION SMART ASS.”

    ENTER…

    JAXIN.

This child wakes up every morning and chooses psychological warfare.

    He doesn’t want money.

    He doesn’t want snacks.

    He wants REACTIONS.

He is a tiny emotional terrorist fueled by Capri Suns and sarcasm.

He says things JUST to watch my eye twitch.

He’ll stand in the doorway while I’m carrying groceries and suddenly remember he exists.

    He’ll ask me seventeen questions…

    …while I’m actively chewing.

    He’ll say,

    “Mom.”

    “What?”

    “Mom.”

    “WHAT?”

    “…Never mind.”

    SIR.

    I WILL FIGHT A CHILD.

    Then…

    THEN…

    It hit me.

    OH MY GOD.

    THIS…

    IS KARMA.

    This isn’t parenting.

    This is a court-ordered sentence.

I am serving life without parole for crimes committed against my mother over the last 40 years.

    Mom…

    I owe you an apology.

Not enough to stop harassing you…

    Let’s not get CRAZY…

    But enough to acknowledge…

    You tried.

    You really did.

    Unfortunately…

    You married my father.

    This is on YOU.

    Respectfully…

    I would like a refund.

    Or at the very least…

    A manufacturer’s warranty.

Because this model appears to have inherited every defective smart-ass gene from the last four generations.

P.S. If Jaxin ever has children…

I’m going to be the MOST supportive grandma in recorded history.

    I’m buying whistles.

    A drum set.

    A recorder.

    Glitter.

    Permanent markers.

    And a puppy.

    Because revenge…

    …is a family tradition.

  • Where do I even look for the black market?

My new daily **beveragino** of choice is officially…

**(MADE AT HOME ‘CAUSE I’M POOR! 😂)**

    ☕ Vanilla Chai Tea

    ✨ 1 tsp turbinado sugar

    ✨ 1 pump Jordan’s Skinny Syrup (Sugar-Free Horchata)

    ✨ Splash of oat milk

    ✨ My tanning drops

    ✨ My liquid collagen

Quite literally the highlight of my day.

I don’t have a whole lot else going for me at the moment.

    I’m employed.

    Cool.

One day a week isn’t exactly paying the bills.

So today’s dilemma is figuring out how in the hell I’m going to realistically bring in about **$1,200 over the next two weeks.**

    Otherwise…

The Millers are one unexpected bill away from living **IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER.**

*(In my best Chris Farley voice.)*

    Okay…maybe August rent is survivable.

    September?

    September is giving…

    **”Well…this is concerning.”**

Our cell phones getting shut off?

That’s becoming a very real possibility within the next couple of weeks.

That one is going to suck.

(I can already hear my teenage daughters complaining.)

Now before anybody gets the wrong idea…

**I AM NOT ASKING FOR HANDOUTS.**

    Notice the wording.

I need to **MAKE** the money.

    **BRING IN** the money.

Not have somebody else solve my problems.

(And to the couple of trolls I know are still silently watching every post…

This little paragraph is especially for you.

    💋 Kisses, bitches.)

Most of you have watched me juggle our finances ever since we left our old jobs a month ago.

    We’ve stretched every dollar.

We lived off the little bit of savings we had left.

    That savings is officially gone.

    Now we’re back to paycheck-to-paycheck.

Which means I’m dusting off all the recipes from my poor-kid childhood and figuring out how to feed five people for approximately seventeen cents and a potato.

    Honestly…

This is probably the hardest financial spot we’ve been in since Matt broke his shoulder and couldn’t work.

    And I hate it.

    I hate not contributing enough.

    I hate feeling behind.

I hate feeling like no matter how hard Matt and I work, we’re constantly sprinting uphill carrying the weight of the world on our backs.

    Three years ago…

    Our credit was BEAUTIFUL.

We had over **$10,000 sitting in escrow.**

    Almost **$8,000 in savings.**

We had busted our asses working 50-60 hour weeks.

    We were ready.

    Like…

I had literally emailed the property manager telling her we were finally ready to buy our house.

    Then…

    On a random Monday.

    Middle of the day.

    A board member texted us.

*”Can you come in at 1:00? We need to have a talk.”*

    We did.

    That meeting changed everything.

My hours were cut from 50 a week to 25.

    Matt’s were cut from 50 to 35.

    Then we were told…

*”Between the two of you, that’s still a living wage.”*

I don’t think I’ll ever forget that sentence.

It felt like a slap in the face.

Especially when the very next conversation involved hearing about someone leaving on a two-week trip out of the country.

    Talk about a gut punch.

Reality didn’t care what someone else thought was a living wage.

Reality said mortgage dreams don’t wait.

Reality said groceries still cost money.

Reality said kids still have to eat.

Reality said dogs and cats don’t understand budget cuts.

So we burned through our savings.

    FAST.

    When that disappeared…

    We turned to credit cards.

    Not because we wanted to.

    Because we had to.

    We didn’t qualify for assistance.

    (We STILL don’t.)

    Apparently we made “too much.”

    (Still do.)

Funny how you can supposedly make too much to receive help…

…while simultaneously wondering how you’re going to keep the lights on.

Those reduced hours weren’t temporary either.

    That started in August.

They didn’t return to anything close to normal until the following May.

    By then…

    The savings were gone.

The dream of buying our house was gone.

    The credit cards were maxed.

And we’ve spent the last almost three years clawing our way back toward daylight.

We were FINALLY getting close again.

    Paying off credit cards.

    Building savings back up.

We STILL have over **$10,000 sitting in escrow.**

    Then everything blew up.

    On a random Sunday morning.

Three people in our household suddenly found themselves out of jobs. All after a long period where the work environment had become increasingly difficult to be in and around for me personally.

For nearly two years we dealt with constant nitpicking.

    Constant criticism.

Multiple meetings where we tried to explain how the environment felt increasingly hostile from our perspective and asked for things to improve.

Walking into work every single day already knowing our opinions carried less value than the gum stuck to someone’s shoe.

The environment became so stressful that every shift felt more like survival than work.

My anxiety got so bad that my hair literally started falling out.

    I had bald patches.

For the longest time I honestly thought it was the MS.

    Turns out…

Stress can do some pretty horrifying things too.

It’s only now, after leaving, that it’s finally starting to grow back.

    Looking back…

I honestly don’t know why we stayed as long as we did.

After our old manager left, we knew we weren’t the people they wanted anymore.

We were simply the people they felt “stuck” with.

And here’s the part that still amazes me…

    Since we left…

    Members.

    Former coworkers.

    Friends.

    Family.

Even vendors who now stop by our new workplace…

Have all reached out and said the same thing “OH man are they talking allll kinds of shit about you guys!”

    Meanwhile…

    I’ve said absolutely nothing.

    Not publicly.

In fact, when we left, I wished them well.

    And I meant it.

    Because despite everything…

    I genuinely hope they’re successful.

    I hope the club thrives.

I hope the employees still there have a great experience.

    I hope everyone wins.

Could I tell my side of the story?

    Absolutely.

    Could I be petty?

    Probably.

Would people finally understand why we chose to leave instead of trying to “work it out?”

    Yep.

There’s one hell of a story.

But I’m not going to tell it.

Because peace is worth more than revenge.

I’d rather spend my energy building something new than reliving something that nearly broke me.

    So that’s where we’re at.

    Scared?

    A little.

    Stressed?

    Absolutely.

    Defeated?

    Not even close.

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you already know one thing about me…

I am too damn stubborn to stay down.

    I’ll sell stuff.

    (Hopefully.)

    I’ll figure something out.

Because quitting has never been an option.

    We’ve climbed out before.

    We’ll climb out again.

Will we buy our house this year?

    Probably not.

Will it happen on the timeline we dreamed about three years ago?

    Definitely not.

    But someday…

I fully intend to stand on the porch of our own home, ugly crying, thinking about every setback, every sleepless night, every maxed-out credit card, every “living wage” comment, every tear, every ounce of stress…

…and know that we earned every single brick. I just hope I want to stay in this town after all of this!

    Until then…

    I’ll keep showing up.

    I’ll keep fighting.

I’ll keep believing that someday all of this bullshit will make one hell of a story.

    And if nothing else…

At least I’ve got one hell of a new beveragino

  • Sleep? NEVER Heard of Her?!!

    PEEPS…

Can somebody PLEASE explain to me why my brain has apparently entered into a legally binding contract with the devil to wake my ass up at 2:34 A.M. every. single. damn. morning?

    Because I’m over it.

I don’t care what I do during the day.

I don’t care if I’ve cooked enough food to feed a small village.

I don’t care if I’ve cleaned the house, done twelve loads of laundry, baked six dozen cookies, solved seventeen family crises, written three novels in my head, and wrestled my own nervous system into submission.

    I go to bed…

    Tired.

    Like…

“Please let me melt into this mattress and become one with the fitted sheet” tired.

    I fall asleep just fine.

    Then…

    BAM.

    2:34 A.M.

    Every.

    Fucking.

    Morning.

    Not 2:32.

    Not 2:41.

    Not “around 2:30.”

    No.

    2:34.

Like my brain has a union job and punches a damn time clock.

“Alright boys…Heather’s unconscious. Wake her up. We’ve got shit to overthink.”

    WHY?!

    WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS?!

    I just want to talk…

    violently.

    And before somebody asks…

    “No, Heather…have you tried melatonin?”

    YES.

It gives me dreams that make absolutely no damn sense.

One night I’m riding a giraffe through Walmart buying bananas for Abraham Lincoln while Taylor Swift and Gordon Ramsay argue over cheese dip.

    No thank you.

    Ambien?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

    ABSOLUTELY THE HELL NOT.

Ambien turns me into a possessed Victorian ghost with Wi-Fi.

Apparently I have had FULL conversations with Matt.

    Entire.

    Conversations.

    Do I remember them?

    Not a single fucking word.

    Honestly…

Based on the look on his face the next morning…

    I DON’T WANT TO.

I’m pretty sure I confessed to crimes I didn’t commit and negotiated peace treaties with imaginary woodland creatures.

    Never again.

    Besides…

I already rattle when I walk because of all the medications I take.

I’m not looking to add another bottle to my collection.

    So here I am…

    Wide awake.

    Everyone else in my house?

Sleeping peacefully like tiny, precious babies.

    Matt?

    Sleeping.

    The kids?

    Sleeping.

    The dog?

    Snoring.

    The cats?

    Probably plotting my murder…

BUT EVEN THOSE TWO ASSHATS ARE ASLEEP.

    Meanwhile…

My brain immediately goes from zero to absolute psychotic chaos.

    Within the first hour alone…

I have become irrationally pissed off over something that happened in 1997!!!!

    Cried.

Laughed so hard as quietly as possible my damn kidney stone started moving.

Cried again because apparently we are emotionally unstable before sunrise now.

Decided I need to become friends with crows.

    Yes…

    CROWS.

    Listen…

If those judgmental little goth chickens insist on landing on my deck every damn day, then one of us is going to crack first.

Either they’re going to accept me into the murder…

Or I’m going to become their emotionally unstable aunt.

    There is no third option.

    Then…

    I start planning supper.

    Immediately followed by…

    “Do we even HAVE food?”

    Inventory commences.

    Bread?

    Gone.

    Milk?

    Gone.

    Eggs?

    Gone.

    Cheese?

Questionable amounts in the fridge and freezer…we really are Midwestern folks!

    Coffee?

    YOU BETTER SHUT YOUR MOUTH!

Suddenly it’s 3:08 in the damn morning and I’m mentally shopping at Walmart.

    Then my brain says…

“You know what would be fun?”

    Existential dread.

    So naturally I begin contemplating…

    The universe.

    My purpose.

    Different religions.

    The meaning of consciousness.

    Whether free will actually exists.

How many civilizations have come and gone.

    What happens after we die.

Whether the animal kingdom has a functioning government.

Whether crows hold grudges? Is the one on my deck trying to kill me or make me do more chores?!

If aliens are watching this shit show wondering what the hell we’re doing.

    Then…

    Without warning…

    My brain shifts gears…

“You should make potato salad tomorrow.”

    WHAT?!

How did we get from the afterlife to mayonnaise?!

    WHO IS DRIVING THIS BUS?!

By the time everyone else wakes up around 9:00…

    Needing breakfast.

    Needing rides.

Needing help finding things that are exactly where I told them they’d be…

    I finally…

    FINALLY…

    Start getting sleepy.

My brain is just sitting over there smoking an imaginary cigarette like…

“Well…we accomplished absolutely fucking nothing. Good work, everybody.”

I’ve spent the last three years mentally running on fumes.

But I honestly don’t know anymore if this is…

    MS.

    Perimenopause.

    ADHD.

    Chronic stress.

    Forty-year-old hormones choosing violence.

Or if all of those assholes have formed a supervillain alliance specifically to make sure Heather never experiences eight uninterrupted hours of sleep again.

At this point I’m convinced my brain has become a 24-hour Waffle House.

    It never closes.

    There is always chaos.

    Somebody is crying.

    Somebody is yelling.

There’s at least one questionable life decision happening.

    And somehow…

    Everyone keeps showing up.

So if I seem a little extra feral today…

If you get seventeen Facebook posts.

If I suddenly start a deep dive into crow sociology.

If I decide to open another business.

    Write another book.

    Rearrange my kitchen.

    Learn astrophysics.

    Bake six different desserts.

    Question the existence of humanity.

And cry because we’re out of bread…

    Just know…

I’ve already lived an entire emotional lifetime before most of you have even hit snooze.

    Sleep?

That bitch left me on read months ago.
